News from the Beach - Leatherback Rescue

December 2003

Leatherback Trust researchers, EARTHWATCH volunteers, park rangers and guides saved a leatherback turtle from certain death. The turtle had wandered past the beach and into the Tamarindo Estuary. It took 3 hours of walking the turtle from 2 miles back in the mangroves back to the mouth of the estuary. At the last minute the turtle turned around again to go back.

Finally they got the turtle to head out into the surf and she went back to the ocean. Later she came back to nest.
