 Overview by Month

October 2006

This season has started with very few turtles. We have only identified 7 different individuals but there could be a total of 9 turtles, since we didn't see a couple of them that nested on Ventanas. It looks like it could be the lowest season in number of turtles ever recorded. Both September and October were unusually dry and there was only a week of heavy rain around mid-October. During this week, we had to leave the beach a couple of times, due to lightning.

Temperatures during the first week of incubation were very high for this time of the year, around 30.0 C, dropped to about 26-27 C when the rain started and it's now about 29 C. We have also marked 6 nests on the beach and have relocated 3 nests to the hatchery. One of the turtles we have seen, is a new recruit and the other 6 are remigrants.

10/06 calendar

November 2006

During the first 9 days of November, the number of turtles sightings increased. One of the turtles seen during this time was tagged in 1993-94 and 5 turtles in 1994-95. By the 30th of November, we have seen 40 turtles. We have marked 14 new turtles and have identified 26 remigrants. By the 1st of December last season we had seen 57 turtles and two years ago, which was the lowest year in number of turtles, we had seen 36. We have relocated 15 nests to the hatchery and we are expecting the first nest to hatch at any time soon, both on the beach and in the hatchery.

11/06 calendar

December 2006

We had 9 new nesting females for the season and now we have 51 turtles total. We had the first hatchlings of the season during the second week of December; the first nest that hatched was in the hatchery on the 10th and the first nest on the beach hatched on the 19th. In total we had 3 nests hatch on the beach and 3 nests hatch in the hatchery. We are expecting a lot of nests to hatch on the beach and in the hatchery during the month of January.

12/06 calendar

January 2007

During the month of January we had 7 new turtles for the season. Now 17 of the 27 nests in the hatchery have hatched, resulting in approximately 365 hatchlings!. We had a lot of turtles during the first week of January but by the end of the month the numbers started to decrease showing that the end of the season is near. Everyone is tired but working very hard!

01/07 calendar

February 2007

We have seen a total of 58 turtles this season at Playa Grande. The good news is that a large percentage of them (30 turtles) were new recruits to the population, this means that the beach protection is working! We marked 193 nests on the beach and relocated 27 to the hatchery and 7 to safer areas on the beach. We have produced 481 hatchlings from the hatchery. Most of the turtles (90%) were seen on Playa Grande and a small percentage (10%)were seen on Playa Ventanas.
