 Overview by Month

October 2004

Compared to the same period last year, we are seeing a decresed number of nesting turtles. Last season, by the end of October, we observed more than 50 turtles. This season, we have only had 13 remigrant turtles and 1 new turtle. Of the 13 remigrants 1 nested for the last time in '02-'03, 8 in '00-'01, 3 in '99-'00 and 1 in '95-'96

November 2004

We have observed 38 turtles so far this season. 7 of them were new recruits and most of them nested for the last time in 2000/2001. Three of them nested for the last time in 2002/2003. We have moved 27 nests into the hatchery and we have marked 54 in-situ nests on the beach. Last year at this time there were at 103 turtles and in 2002/03 (the lowest year in number of nesting turtles) there were 34 by the first of December (there were a total of 57 turtles at Playa Grande that season).

December 2004

We have only had 43 turtles so far this season - 10 of those were new turtles and we haven't had a turtle coming for the first time in the season in two weeks. We have moved a total of 31 leatherback nests into the hatchery and 2 ridleys, and we have marked on the beach 118 in-situ nests. The sand is extremely dry this year and most turtles need to try several times before they nest succesfully. So far, compared to other seasons, this is the fewest number of turtles observed at Las Baulas. Last year at this time, 134 turtles had been counted, and two years ago 51.

January 2005

We have seen 48 turtles (individuals) in total this season, 12 of them were new recruits to the population. 89 turtles were seen in January (nests). Last year there were 257 turtles in January. We have marked at total of 159 nests on the beach. We have moved 31 clutches to the hatchery and we have relocated 35 nests to a safer location on the beach. This has been the lowest year in number of nesting turtles in the history of the project. We hope to see an increase next year.
