The Hatchery
Listed below is our hatchery data for the 2001/2002 nesting season. We transferred 135 clutches to the hatchery between October 5 and December 15, 2001. We have found the hatchery to be an excellent research tool for investigating leatherback nest and egg biology. This year we are measuring nest temperature, oxygen consumption, hatching success, and embryotic mortality.

This table outlines the details of 126 nests placed in the hatchery. The left and right flipper tag numbers show maternal identity.

This figure represents the nest temperature of hatchery nest (H002) throughout October and November 2001.

The pink line is the nest temperature, the blue line is a control temperature (same sand depth but no eggs).

The black line is the pivotal temperature for leatherback hatchling sex determination (29.5 C = 50% male, 50% female).
